About the piece

Metro Waltz seeks to evoke the life of a bustling city, achieved through a constantly changing key center cast in an off-kilter waltz that alternates 6/8 and 5/8 time signatures. Written for the weird combo of oboe, trombone, cello, marimba, and tubular bells, the music starts with a fragmented yet lively jig which transitions into a slower lyrical section, before triumphantly returning to the opening material. The harmonic language and instrumentation choices owes a lot to Takashi Yoshimatsu’s Symphony No. 4, particularly the second movement.
